About Alum cave

Alum Cave Trail stands as one of Gatlinburg's most rewarding hiking experiences, offering a challenging but accessible 5.5-mile roundtrip journey through the diverse landscapes of the Smokies. The trail begins at the Alum Cave Bluffs parking area along Newfound Gap Road, where early arrival (before 7:00 AM) is essential to secure a spot, especially during peak seasons.

The hike progresses through distinct sections, each offering unique natural features. Your first mile follows Alum Cave Creek, crossing log bridges and passing through old-growth forest. At 1.3 miles, you'll encounter Arch Rock, where steel cables guide you up stone steps cut directly into the rock. The trail then opens to inspiring mountain vistas before reaching Alum Cave Bluffs at 2.3 miles - note that despite its name, this isn't actually a cave but rather a massive concave bluff that towers 80 feet high.

The path is well-maintained but can be slippery when wet, with some steep sections requiring careful footing. During winter months, ice formations often create additional challenges. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as the steady elevation gain (about 1,200 feet to the bluffs) demands good energy levels.

The trail is free to access and open year-round, though winter conditions can make it treacherous. Plan for a 3-4 hour round trip if hiking to the bluffs, longer if continuing to Mount LeConte. The path offers excellent photography opportunities, particularly in early morning light or during fall colors. Weekday visits typically see fewer crowds than weekends, but this remains one of Gatlinburg's most popular hiking areas throughout the year.
