Bluff Mountain Fire Tower

Standing at 3,003 feet above sea level, the Bluff Mountain Fire Tower offers some of the most spectacular 360-degree views in the Smoky Mountains region. From the observation deck, you can see clear across Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and even spot Knoxville's skyline on a clear day. The historic tower serves as a less crowded alternative to many of Pigeon Forge's popular tourist attractions.

Getting there requires navigating a steep, winding mountain road that's best tackled in a vehicle with good ground clearance. The metal staircase to the top is sturdy but steep, with open sides that may challenge those uncomfortable with heights. At the top platform, use extra caution as there are minimal safety railings.

The tower is especially popular at sunrise and sunset when the valley fills with golden light and long shadows stretch across the mountains. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate unobstructed views in every direction, though you'll want to secure your gear well given the occasional strong winds at this elevation.

While some graffiti mars portions of the structure, the sweeping mountain panoramas more than make up for these minor distractions. Consider bringing water and wearing sturdy shoes for the climb. The site is free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter conditions can make the access road treacherous.

For the best experience, visit on weekday mornings when crowds are thinner and visibility tends to be clearest. Pack a jacket even in summer - temperatures at the tower can be significantly cooler than in Pigeon Forge below.
