Gabes Mountain Trailhead

Gabes Mountain Trailhead offers a rewarding 4.4-mile round-trip hike through the quieter side of the Smokies, leading hikers to the 90-foot Hen Wallow Falls. Located in the Cosby area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this trail presents a moderately challenging trek that gains roughly 900 feet in elevation.

The path starts deceptively gentle but quickly reveals its true character with a steady uphill climb. Dense forest canopy provides welcome shade during summer months, while spring brings a spectacular display of wildflowers along the trail edges. Several rustic footbridges cross mountain streams, offering natural rest stops and photo opportunities.

Experienced hikers should note the trail's technical sections - roots and rocks demand careful footing, especially after rain. The path is well-maintained but narrow in spots, with some steeper segments requiring extra caution. While the dense forest limits long-range views, the surrounding hardwood forest creates an immersive wilderness experience.

At roughly 2.2 miles, Hen Wallow Falls appears as a thin cascade dropping over dark rocks. The viewing area can be slippery, so proper hiking footwear is essential. The return journey follows the same path downhill, which can be equally challenging on tired legs.

The trailhead parking area is free and typically has space available, even on weekends. As part of the national park, the trail is open year-round, though winter conditions can make the trek significantly more challenging. Pack plenty of water, as there are no facilities along the trail. While not the most spectacular waterfall in the Smokies, the peaceful setting and moderate challenge make this a satisfying half-day hike for intermediate hikers.
