Yellow Face Overlook

Yellow Face Overlook stands as one of Sylva's most rewarding scenic spots, offering expansive views of the Great Smoky Mountains that stretch for miles in every direction. Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, this free public overlook provides an excellent vantage point for both sunrise and sunset viewing, with morning fog often creating dramatic scenes as it rolls through the valleys below.

The viewing area features several parking spaces and a wide, paved observation point that's accessible for most visitors. During peak fall foliage season (typically mid-October), the panorama transforms into a colorful display of reds, oranges, and yellows that blanket the surrounding peaks. Spring and summer bring vibrant greenery and wildflowers to the surrounding slopes, while winter offers crisp, clear views of the mountain ridges when leaves have fallen.

Photography enthusiasts particularly appreciate the unobstructed views and the way changing light conditions create different moods throughout the day. The overlook's elevation makes it a prime spot for watching storms roll through the valley and observing local wildlife, including hawks that often soar on the mountain thermals.

As with most Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks, Yellow Face is open 24/7 year-round, weather permitting. However, winter weather can occasionally cause temporary closures. Visitors should bring warm layers as the exposed location can be significantly cooler and windier than downtown Sylva. For the best experience, arrive early morning or late afternoon when the lighting enhances the mountain scenery and crowds are typically lighter.
