The Sinks Waterfall in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park: A Scenic Stop You May Have Missed
The Sinks is located on Little River Road, west of the Sugarlands Visitor Center, in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
If you’re taking Little River Gorge Road from Gatlinburg to Townsend or Cades Cove, you’ll drive right over it. Little River Rd is also one of the best scenic drives in the Smoky Mountains, which you can read about here.
In fact you may have driven over it before. It’s easy to miss since you’re driving right over the waterfall, so it’s hard to see from the road.
This roadside waterfall is easily accessible, with a small parking area right off the road.
The Sinks
The Sinks was created when loggers used dynamite to clear a log jam, altering the river’s course and creating the current formation.
- Height: Approximately 15-30 feet
- Impressive due to its volume, channeling the entire flow of the Little River
- Named for the large whirlpool at its base
- Best viewed after rainstorms when water volume increases
