About Dollywood
Dollywood opened its 41st season this March and honestly, it's wild how Dolly keeps pouring money into this place. The big deal this year is NightFlight Expedition — a $50 million indoor coaster that's supposed to mimic those firefly shows the Smokies are famous for. They're aiming for a June opening, and we're curious if it'll live up to the hype since it's their biggest investment ever.
The live entertainment here actually wins awards, not just participation trophies. You'll catch bluegrass bands and gospel groups throughout the day, plus craftsmen doing real glassblowing and blacksmithing in Craftsman's Valley. It beats another spinning ride any day, and our kids actually stop to watch instead of running past.
Summer crowds are brutal though — they extend hours until 9:30pm just to handle everyone. We made the mistake of going on a Saturday in July once and spent more time in lines than on rides. The cinnamon bread from the Grist Mill is worth fighting crowds for, but skip those overpriced turkey legs.
One thing that catches people off guard is how they close random weekdays, especially in April and August. We've seen families show up to locked gates after driving hours, so check the schedule first. Lightning Rod got retracked over the winter, so hopefully it'll actually run consistently now.
They added some seasonal theming this year too — Apple Jack's Market and something called Tassletop Junction. We haven't seen it yet, but knowing Dollywood, it'll be overdone in the best possible way.
