Lickstone Overlook

Perched along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Maggie Valley, Lickstone Overlook stands as one of the most impressive vantage points in Western North Carolina. From this scenic spot, you can take in a sweeping 180-degree vista of the Great Smoky Mountains, with clear views stretching from Deals Gap all the way to Clingmans Dome (known as Kuwohi to the Cherokee).

The overlook features a spacious viewing area with plenty of room to set up cameras or simply lean against the stone wall and soak in the panorama. On clear days, you can spot multiple mountain ranges layered against the horizon, creating that distinctive blue haze that gives the Blue Ridge its name. Fall colors typically peak in early October, transforming the valley below into a patchwork of reds, oranges, and yellows.

Like all Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks, Lickstone is free to visit and open year-round, though winter weather can occasionally cause road closures. The parking area accommodates about 10-12 vehicles, and you'll find it's usually less crowded than some of the more well-known stops along the parkway. Morning visits often offer the clearest views before afternoon haze sets in, and sunrise here is particularly striking as the light gradually illuminates the valley.

Pack a jacket even in summer—the elevation means it's typically 10-15 degrees cooler than Maggie Valley below. Consider bringing binoculars to spot distant peaks, and don't forget your camera. The overlook is well-maintained and features interpretive signs that help identify key landmarks in the distance.
