About Ole Smoky Distillery "The Holler"
Ole Smoky's "The Holler" sits right on the Parkway and you can smell the corn mash from the sidewalk — that's how you know it's the real deal. We've been here probably a dozen times over the years, and it's still wild watching them make actual moonshine through those huge windows while tourists snap photos. The free tastings are legit too, not those tiny sips some places give you.
Fair warning though — weekends in summer are absolutely brutal. We made the mistake of showing up on a Saturday afternoon in July once and couldn't even get close to the tasting bar. The live music draws huge crowds, which is great for atmosphere but terrible if you actually want to taste anything without waiting 20 minutes.
The guided tours are worth doing if you're genuinely curious about the process, but honestly the viewing windows show you most of what you need to see. They'll walk you through 13 different samples including some whiskeys, and their staff actually knows what they're talking about instead of just reading from a script. One thing though — pace yourself on those samples. We watched a guy from Ohio nearly face-plant after the apple pie moonshine.
Oh and the parking situation is a nightmare. Get there before 11 AM or you'll be walking from three blocks away. The whole strip gets clogged with traffic, and there's no secret back entrance or anything — you're stuck dealing with Gatlinburg's usual chaos.
What we love is that it feels authentic instead of Disney-fied like some of the newer attractions. The open-air setup means you're not trapped in some sterile tasting room, and when the bluegrass bands are playing it actually feels like you're experiencing something real instead of just another tourist trap.
